Every day is a fight to women. Not only in modern times, but also in Ancient Greece the great and strong women were able to do incredible things in order to protect and to fight for their ideals. How about we learn a little bit more about 7 of many impressive goddesses of Greek mythology, to celebrate the International Women's Day?
Rhea – Impressives goddesses
The Titan, daughter of Ge and Uranus, was 'only' the mother of all gods and goddesses, god of female fertility, maternity, and generations. From Greek language, her name means 'flow'. Rhea was married to Cronus and they had six children, who were swallowed by their own father after a disturbing prophecy: one of them would dethrone the Titan. Like any mother, Rhea was capable of a heroic gesture when she secretly protected the youngest child – Zeus – inside a cave, and instead of giving the boy to Cronus, she gave a stone wrapped in dirty sheets. Brave, right?
Hera
Queen of the Olympus and Zeus's wife, Hera was the goddess of marriage, women, stars, and the sky. Polemic myths and tales about assaults are connected to this incredibly beautiful woman. For instance, when Ixion tried to violate the goddess and ended up punished by being chained to a fire wheel. Tricked by Zeus, she was seduced and fooled by fate when she decided to conceive a child by her own. As a result, she became a villain in many myths, for she would not give in her interests and ambitions easily.
Nyx
Nyx was a powerful woman that came as the dawn of creation. Goddess of night, she was one of the progenitor goddesses and one of the primordial ones as well. Alone, she created the following obscure spirits: Three Fates, Sleep, Pain, Death, and Behavior. The history about Nyx talksabout the birth of Cosmos, her title as mother of gods and demons, the night, and witchcraft.
Hestia
While most goddesses enjoyed living with all their bodies and hearts, Hestia enjoyed living in 'chastity'. The virgin god of hearth and fireplaces, oldest daughter of Rhea and Cronus, was the first one to be swallowed by her father when she was born. Later, Zeus demanded her father to expel his siblings – Hestia included. Although she was a virgin, the goddess was very desired by Apollo and Poseidon, but she decided for chastity and owned the royal fireplace. Who said that every goddess needed a man by her side to succeed?
Metis
Looking for wise advices? Call Metis. The Oceanus and Thetis's daughter mastered the art of advising, planning, and wisdom. The goddess was Zeus's counselor during the Titanomachy and she was responsible for drawing up a plan for leading Cronus to expel his swallowed children. Unfairly treated, the wise goddess was swallowed by Zeus after another disturbing prophecy. The Oracle told Zeus that Metis would conceive a child who would become even greater than himself. However, women are not here to play, right? Metis managed to conceive Athena while she was inside Zeus's body, and equipped her daughter with weapons and armor before she was reborn from her father's head. Bizarre, but fair enough.
Athena
Athena was born armed and ready to fight for her ideals! Just like her mother, she was also entitled as goddess of wisdom, advices, protection of towers, of prudent wars, heroic actions, and poetry as well. With her shield and her harpoon, Athena played important roles in amazing Greek myths, starting from her birth from Zeus's head, already as an adult and armed woman.
Like most goddesses, violation was also part of her history: Hephaestus made an attempt and failed, but he released his seeds from above the Earth, bringing Erichthonius to life. Athena adopted him as her own son. Besides, she helped Perseus during his journey to capture Medusa's head, Heracles with his Twelve Labors, and she punished Tiresias with blindness after spying the goddess taking a bath – very justifiable. What a woman!
Styx
Metis's sister, she was the goddess of River Styx, the invulnerability river, and her spirit was a real personification of hate. During the Titanomachy, she preferred to side with Zeus, offering the help of her children Zelus (rivalry), Kratos (power), Bia (force), and Nike (victory). Later, Styx was rewarded by having her River named the responsible for giving oaths to all gods.
It does not matter if it is in Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse mythology, or any other culture; women have always played primordial roles when it came to solving problems, conflicts, forgiveness, and fights. Today we celebrate and remember our strong existence; however, keep in mind that our fight is daily. Always love, admire, and respect the women around you.
